Here at Pure Light Laser Clinic (skin care, microdermabrasion for acne, permanent laser hair removal, and laser scar removal), we’re going to take this time to share the ongoing changes happening in the city of Vancouver, BC in the world of media.
There was once a census call made to many of the males that lived around the downtown Vancouver area that asked the revealing question of whether or not the man was gay. The results were a resounding yes with 80% of those surveyed responding in the affirmative. Currently, there’s no hotter spot than downtown Vancouver for the gay population in the area, and if you were to call other areas in the Vancouver region, you wouldn’t get the same results. Of course, you may still find a lot of gay men in these areas, but nowhere near downtown Vancouver’s numbers.
If you were to visit the west end of Vancouver, you’d not be surprised by this high percentage. You may even consider that the percentage of gay men in the area is too low considering the huge amount of rainbow flags being flown around the area. There are flags everywhere in the area. You’ll find them hanging in windows of homes and apartments, in every business, flying from bikes and cars, and even on the city streets. In fact, Rainbow flags are so predominate you’ll see one painted in the crosswalk of the most central road intersection.
You may be wondering to yourself how did Vancouver become the Mecca for gay men and the answer to that is that it evolved that way over time. Vancouver itself probably doesn’t produce more gay men, but they are probably drawn to the area. A strong gay community that supports itself can be a huge draw, and what once started off small has exploded. Gay men that live in other small Canadian towns tend to migrate to the area because why not go where you’re welcome? Toronto also has a decent sized gay community that may even rival Vancouver’s, but it’s a large city. The community in Vancouver is welcomed by the whole city. Vancouver’s community can be seen to have more cultural and political power because of this embracement by the residents than Toronto.
Some may be surprised that Vancouver doesn’t have more gay nightclubs to visit, but there are certainly some gems to be visited in the area. The drag members of the community here are well-developed and often serve as hosts and event planners. You may even find them doing stand-up comedy at clubs around the city, at clubs that cater to the gay community and beyond. Which is just one way that you can see how the gay community and the rest of the population in the area will mix natural among each other with humor and style? The gay male comedians are often big hits with the crowd once given a chance.
Many of the women in the area love the gay male population. Some feel that they must have a cool gay male friend to be hip while others are genuinely happy to have a good friend to confide in that can offer insight into their straight counterparts. For these women, the support and advice that they get from their gay male friends are vital. Plus, who doesn’t love a shopping buddy that can give the best fashion advice?
More gay couples are moving towards suburban neighborhoods to settle down to escape the hectic busy lifestyles of the city. These couples are more likely to identify with what’s considered a traditional family. Some are just tired of the busy lifestyle, and some want to start raising families. They are often attracted to neighborhoods with newlyweds and young families. The gay culture in the Vancouver is powerful, and that power will continue to grow as time passes.
